README.TXT May 3, 2008 This file was updated for issue with Jaspell Jaldi Version 7.0.4a - 7.0.7 for Multiple Asian and Roman Scripts ----------------------- INITIAL PROCEDURES: *1 Read this document. *2 Follow the instructions shown below on: - Installation of the Jaldi programme; - Installation of the dongle (if you have purchased this protective hardware device); - Installation and initialisation of the fonts. *3 Follow the instructions shown below for registration and transferable dongled access codes, otherwise some of the software features will not be turned on, such as printing, copying and exporting. ----------------------- INSTALLATION OF THE JALDI PROGRAMME: Insert the CD in your CD-ROM drive; Click on Start, Run. Type the name of the CD drive (usually "D:") followed by "\setup.exe" - e.g. "d:\setup.exe". Alternatively, click on "Browse" and click through the Explorer display of directories and files, until you find the CD drive. Find the "setup.exe" file. If the CD contains more than one setup routine, "browse" to the routine you prefer. For example, you may choose the "... Without Sounds\setup.exe" or "... With Sounds\setup.exe". (See below.) Choose "OK"; Note the name of the application directory - e.g. "c:\Program Files\Jaspell Multilingual Word Processor" where you install the application programme (e.g. jaldi32A.exe). ----------------------- "... WITHOUT SOUNDS" or "... WITH SOUNDS" - WHICH SETUP TO CHOOSE? If these two options have been provided on your CD, one allows the programme to be installed quickly; the other takes more time, as it installs numerous sound files in the same process. Both of these setups install the same word processor programme, so this does not affect the ability to handle sound features. Perhaps you don't need to deal with the sound files at this stage, because you already have the sound files on your computer, or because you don't intend to use them. If in doubt, we suggest that you may prefer to run "Without Sounds\setup.exe" and then copy the sound files later. Do this simply and quickly by using your File Explorer and dragging the directory "Sound Files\JWav1" from the CD to your hard disk. The target on your hard disk for the "JWav1" directory could, for example, be under "C:\" or under the application directory - which might be "C:\Program Files\Jaspell Multilingual Word Processor". ----------------------- LATEST SOFTWARE DRIVER FOR THE DONGLE DEVICE FOR INSTALLATION USING "dk2wn32.exe" *1 The recent version of a dongle driver has been provided on the CD in the directory “Latest Dongle Driver”. *2 Alternatively, you may have downloaded it from www.des.co.uk/downloads/238/dk2v5/dk2wn32.exe. *3 Copy the file "dk2wn32.exe" to the application directory which you have noted as described above; *4 This process will overwrite the older file "dk2wn32.exe"; *4 Choose "OK". ----------------------- INSTALLATION OF THE DONGLE DRIVER SOFTWARE: *1 Attach the dongle hardware device (new 'stick' to USB socket or old 'box' to LPT parallel printer port); *2 Click on Start, Run; *3 Browse to the application directory which you have noted as described above; *4 Select the file "dk2wn32.exe" (latest version, as noted in the previous section); *5 Choose "OK". *6 When you wish to run the Jaldi programme, the dongle should be attached to the port on the computer. *7 If a printer or similar device is attached to the back of the old box-shaped dongle, then the power to the printer may have to be turned on. *8 See below regarding "Updates for Software to Drive Dongles". ------------------------ INSTALLATION OF THE NEW PROGRAMME: If you have a previous version of this 32-bit Jaspell Jaldi package on your system, it is best to remove it first. From the Windows Desktop screen Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programmes and select the old package to be removed. (Old documents you have made will be left as they are in the directories.) ------------------------ INSTALLATION OF THE NEW FONTS: If you have a previous version of the 32-bit Jaspell Jaldi package or of the fonts (jbengal3, jvienn01, etc), on your system, it is best to remove them first. From the Windows Desktop screen Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programmes and select the old package to be removed. (Old documents you have made will be left as they are in the directories.) From the Windows Desktop screen Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Fonts and select the old fonts to be removed. The names of the new fonts can be seen listed in the CD's Fonts directory. These are:- jaf1nn01.ttf - normal - African (not part of compilation programme, so must be "picked") jaf1nn02.ttf - narrow - " jaf1nn03.ttf - wide - " jbengal3.ttf - normal - Bengali and Assamese jbengal4.ttf - narrow - " jbengal5.ttf - wide - " jdev01.ttf - normal - Devanagari for Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Sanskrit jdev02.ttf - narrow - " jdev03.ttf - wide - " jguj01.ttf - normal - Gujarati for Gujarati and some forms of Sindhi jguj02.ttf - narrow - " jguj03.ttf - wide - " jgur01.ttf - normal - Gurumukhi for Punjabi jgur02.ttf - narrow - " jgur03.ttf - wide - " jhirag01.ttf - normal - Hira Gana for Japanese phonetic casual form jhirag02.ttf - narrow - " jhirag03.ttf - wide - " jkatak01.ttf - normal - Katakana for Japanese phonetic formal form jkatak02.ttf - narrow - " jkatak03.ttf - wide - " jla1nn01.ttf - normal - Roman for Latin 1 Group jla1nn02.ttf - narrow - " jla1nn03.ttf - wide - " jla2nn01.ttf - normal - Roman for Latin 2 Group jla2nn02.ttf - narrow - " jla2nn03.ttf - wide - " jla3nn01.ttf - normal - Roman for Latin 3 Group jla3nn02.ttf - narrow - " jla3nn03.ttf - wide - " jla4nn01.ttf - normal - Roman for Latin 4 Group jla4nn02.ttf - narrow - " jla4nn03.ttf - wide - " jnaskh04.ttf - normal - Naskh horizontal form for Arabic, Persian, Pushtu, Urdu jnaskh05.ttf - narrow - " jnaskh06.ttf - wide - " jnasta04.ttf - normal - Nastaliq cursive form for Arabic, Persian, Pushtu, Urdu jnasta05.ttf - narrow - " jnasta06.ttf - wide - " jpinnn01.ttf - normal - "Roman for Latin 6": Chinese Mandarin Pinyin jpinnn02.ttf - narrow - " jpinnn03.ttf - wide - " jromaj01.ttf - normal - Romaji for Japanese Roman form jromaj02.ttf - narrow - " jromaj03.ttf - wide - " jvienn01.ttf - normal - "Roman for Latin 5": Vietnamese jvienn02.ttf - narrow - " jvienn03.ttf - wide - " You may wish when removing the old fonts to move them to a new directory temporarily until you are sure that the new fonts have been installed and are behaving as you wish. ----------------------- INITIALISATION OF THE FONTS: The fonts should get installed automatically when you run the main setup programme. Evidently a few computer setups of Windows configurations do not do this automatically. The effect of this is that, when you run the Jaspell Jaldi Wor Processor for the first time, you can't get your foreign fonts to appear on the screen, and Windows replaces them with some other fonts like Wingdings or a system font. However, to ensure that they get initialised before you run the Jaldi programme for the first time, we recommend that you:- Go Start, Settings, Control Panel, Fonts. When this part of Windows opens, it will activate the new fonts and register them, even if this did not happen before. Alternatively, if the fonts seem to behave strangely when you run the new word processing programme, it may be because of a conflict with previous fonts which were not properly removed before you tried installing the new package. See above concerning how to remove the old fonts and which ones are involved. ----------------------- MANUAL RE-INSTALLATION OF THE FONTS: The new fonts can be installed again manually from the CD's Fonts directory. From the Windows Desktop screen go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Fonts, Install New Fonts. Point to the CD drive and the fonts directory (e.g. D:\ Fonts). Select the new fonts to be manually installed. ------------------------ MESSAGES WHILE SETUP.EXE IS RUNNING: An error message may appear on the screen, if you try to install the programme more than once. Windows may find another copy of a file. (This can happen especially with font files.) You may respond so as to replace the existing file with the one on your latest CD. Then continue the installation. ------------------------ REGISTRATION AND TRANSFERABLE DONGLED ACCESS CODE PROCEDURES: From Version 7 onwards minor upgrades can be downloaded from www.jaspell.co.uk and installed freely. However, customers must pay for and register major upgrades such as from Version 6 to Version 7 or increases in the range of language groups covered. * Use without a dongle requires each machine to have a unique Activation Code (A). * Use with a dongle requires each customer to obtain from Jaspell a transferable Dongled Access Code (E). A customer can install his Dongled Access Code on any of his machines where he wishes to use his dongle. Until the customer implements his Dongled Access Code on a machine, he will be allowed up to 9 sessions on that machine with the software features turned on. After that some features will only be turned on again by implementation of the customer's Dongled Access Code. Note that a customer's Activation Code (A) for a unique machine will also proxy for a Dongled Access Code (E) to enable full use with a dongle on his various other machines. However, the customer may prefer to control the use of his machines with the help of the separate Dongled Access Code (E). However, also note that a customer's transferable Dongled Access Code (E) will not proxy for the Activation Code (A) that is required to enable full use on a unique machine without a dongle. The first time you run Jaspell Jaldi a dialogue establishes whether you have implemented a Registration Activation Code or a Dongled Access Code in respect to the current version of the software. You can start the registration dialogue again by going to Menu / Register. *Registration For Use Without a Dongle: *STEP 1: You send Jaspell the two lines (B and C) of code information created by the registration enquiry on your machine. *STEP 2: When Jaspell have received your payment, they send you an activation code line (A). *STEP 3: You install the activation code (A) by following the registration dialogue again. *Registration For Use With a Dongle: *STEP 1: You send Jaspell the a line (D) of code information created by the registration enquiry on your machine. *STEP 2: When Jaspell have received your payment, they send you a Dongled Access Code line (E). *STEP 3: You install the Dongled Access Code (E) by following the registration dialogue again. Then you can enjoy the full features of the software. ------------------------ HELP SYSTEM: Although a printed manual can be provided, on-line help is available while you are using the Jaldi programme to explain what you should do. (Jaldi5a.hlp) This file has been provided on the CD in the Directory "Software Help". The help file gets installed in the application directory along with the programme. ------------------------ TUITION ON THE CD: Various tools created by Jaspell have been provided on the CD in "Language Tuition" to help you learn to read and write - and to type - some of the languages covered by the word processing programme. These ".exe" programmes can be run from the CD without any Jaspell programme having been installed on your computer. However, some of these may require you already to have installed the necessary Jaspell foreign language fonts. The fonts can be installed individually onto your computer from the CD's directory "Fonts" using "Start, Settings, Control Panel, Fonts, File, Install New Fonts". ------------------------ NOTE/CAUTION ABOUT SOFTWARE VERSIONS: This 32-bit (Jaldi 5) version is for Windows 95 and later. Version 4 was for Windows 98 or later. The fonts were "Symbol" type fonts. Windows 98 2nd Edition changed the way Windows handles fonts. Jaspell decided to modify their fonts and correspondingly their 32-bit programme. This is for compatibility across Windows platforms and different versions of Jaldi software including the 16-bit version used since 1995. RTF documents made with Jaldi 5 and using its associated (Version 2) fonts can be opened consistently between Windows 3.1, Windows 95, or higher packages using appropriate versions of Jaldi. ------------------------ QUESTIONS: *1. If Error Message 380 is encountered with versions before 5.0.7, it may be because you are trying to run it on a new computer that is not fully set up. For example, if the programme searches for printer settings, but you have no printer installed, then it could not find any settings. Version 5.0.7 is intended to resume working without crashing, even if a printer is not found. *2. If you have your Windows set up so that (in Explorer, for example) the filename extensions such as ".INI" or ".PAR" are hidden, the programme may go looking for certain files with their extension, but not be able to find them. Try changing your Windows settings to show these extensions. *3. If you wish, use the facility in Menu Format: "Keep Methods" to save some of the features that you use most frequently. ------------------------ ADDITIONS IN THE RECENT VERSIONS NOT YET COVERED IN ONLINE HELP FILE *Export documents in PDF format (- click on Menu / File) [*Magnify text locally.] *Manipulate Table columns (- click on Menu / Table) *Change length of file name displayed in Files Most Recently Used List (- Menu / File) *Bullets and Numbering (- click on Menu / Format) *How to use Chinese Mandarin Pinyin (- click on Menu / Mode) *Word Count (- click on Menu / Tools) ------------------------- UPDATES FOR JASPELL JALDI SOFTWARE: Updates of the programme and fonts can be downloaded from www.jaspell.co.uk, as described above at REGISTRATION AND TRANSFERABLE DONGLED ACCESS CODE PROCEDURES. Files can also be supplied on CD and sent by Jaspell at an extra charge. ------------------------- UPDATES FOR SOFTWARE TO DRIVE DONGLES: Updated drivers for DK2 dongles can be downloaded from the Internet: www.des.co.uk/downloads/238/dk2v5/dk2wn32.exe or (more recent driver name for DK2 dongles). ------------------------- CONTACT: © 1995-2008 B.
